Marubeni Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Impack Pratama Group, a renowned building materials manufacturer in Indonesia, through Impack's subsidiary, PT Sirkular Karya Indonesia (SKI), on December 6, 2024. This strategic collaboration marks an important step in addressing plastic waste issues and promoting a circular economy in Indonesia.
SKI, as Impack Group's operational unit championing "green initiatives," will focus its activities on recycling plastic waste into value-added building products. These innovative products will be marketed through Impack's integrated distribution network spread throughout Indonesia. In this partnership, Marubeni will play a crucial role by supporting plastic waste management for SKI, ensuring the securing and procurement of plastic waste from industries and waste collectors. Additionally, Marubeni will leverage its global network to facilitate the export of SKI products, as well as conduct research and development related to plastic credits and carbon credits within this recycling ecosystem.
The joint commitment of Impack Pratama and Marubeni aims to develop this unique ecosystem, with the hope of making SKI one of the leading operational business models in Indonesia in the field of plastic recycling. SKI has shown impressive progress in recycling-based product innovation, including the use of recycled PET bottles as raw material for ECOLITE roofing products, as well as recycling HDPE/LDPE plastic bags into DECOBOND/ALCOTUFF ACP panels. In the near future, SKI also plans to introduce the ALDURO roofing product, made entirely from 100% recycled various types of plastic waste, marking a breakthrough in the eco-friendly building materials industry.
All processing technologies and technical knowledge for these innovative products are developed internally through the Impack Research and Innovation Center (IRIC). This reflects Impack Group's strong commitment to sustainable innovation and technological independence in supporting the circular economy. The partnership between Marubeni and Impack Pratama Group through SKI is expected to have a significant positive impact, not only in reducing plastic waste and creating new jobs but also in promoting eco-friendly product innovation and raising public awareness about the importance of recycling.
By combining Marubeni's expertise in global trade and its international network with Impack Pratama's local innovation and knowledge, this collaboration has the potential to become a successful model for similar initiatives in the future. This joint effort is not only aligned with Indonesia's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also reflects both companies' commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Through this initiative, Marubeni and Impack Pratama hope to contribute significantly to the development of a circular economy in Indonesia, while demonstrating the important role of international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges.
